UPDATED REPORT : Victims have made contact and filed a firsthand report.

Cruisers tied their dinghy to the Dutch Customs dock by the bridge at 1100HRS and went inside to complete formalities. Almost immediately the dinghy was stolen. Video surveillance captured the lurking thief and his rapid departure to the lagoon.

The victims discovered the theft at 1400HRS when they returned to the dinghy dock after doing some errands. They immediately returned to the Customs office. Officials there contacted an inspector from the governmental Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunications, the police and the Coast Guard on their behalf. The Ministry inspector arrived 2 hours later, the police 3 hours later and took reports.

The victims made a report the next morning on the VHF net. Officials shared video surveillance / video footage with them. No follow-up from police or other officials has been made 4 days later.

Engine : Yamaha Enduro 15HP 2 stroke Model # E15DMHS. Serial # 6B4K S 1311124

DETAILS: Overnight and in-the-water and not locked dinghy was stolen from a yacht in the lagoon.  It was found by the Navy and returned via the Dutch Coast Guard. The owner advises that the closed loop painter was intact, and would have required removal.

CSSN NEWS – dinghy/outboard recovered !

 

Recently CSSN published a CSSN incident  report about an in-the-water and unlocked dinghy/outboard  that was reported stolen in the Simpson Bay Lagoon.

The Dutch Coast Guard recovered the dinghy/engine intact. It was found adrift in the lagoon during a nighttime patrol. It is being held at the Coast Guard station and will be reclaimed by the owner.

CSSN has updated the original report and will remove it entirely from our database/website in a few days.

STOLEN ITEMS: Highfield 290 center console dinghy / 20HP Honda outboard. Hull ID: CN-HFM 42759 D425. Engine SN: BAMJ-1558405

DETAILS: Between 2230 and 0300HRS an in-the-water and not locked dinghy was stolen from a yacht anchored in Simpson Bay while owners slept onboard. A search was made, without result. A police report was made.

UPDATE: Dinghy was found 24 January severely damaged. It was apparent the thieves had encountered difficulty removing the engine and chose to destroy both the engine and dinghy before it was abandoned.

DETAILS: Overnight an in-the water,  16ft AB dinghy / 60HP Suzuki outboard was stolen in the Cupecoy area.

It is not known if a police report was made.
