Daytime Robbery – Maroni River, French Guiana

While technically not part of the Caribbean Basin, the Maroni River which borders French Guiana and Surinam is becoming more popular with cruisers in our region. CSSN received a first-hand report of a daytime robbery there and worked closely with Noonsite , who have published a detailed report.

At 10 am, 15 March, 2016 four cruisers were on a dinghy excursion about 2 miles upriver from the marina when they were approached and briefly detained by a pirogue, containing 3 armed men. They surrendered their luggage and were not harmed. The incident was reported to the marina, and the local Gendarme (police) are investigating.

CSSN UPDATE :

The stolen bag was recovered on the south end of the beach by a resident.  The camera and reading glasses were gone.  Dinghy lights, boat cards and a pen remained in the bag.

According to the victim “We asked the Bequia police about getting a copy of the police report.  To do this we must make an application and then take the ferry to St Vincent, find our way to some specific police station and pay $100 EC to get a copy of the official police report that we made. We later confirmed this burdensome “victim unfriendly” process several times with not only the police but others in the community.”

CSSN NEWS
CSSN does not report crimes ashore in our database. When they occur in areas frequented by cruisers we will sometimes make a NEWS post. CSSN recently received the following from victims who were robbed at Fort Louis, in Marigot, St. Martin. Many cruisers hike up to the old fort to enjoy the scenic view.

Today (20th of June 2015, 03:15 pm) we hiked up to the Fort Louis in Marigot and got robbed there in the middle of the day.

Two young men were waiting for us behind the walls of the fort, threatened us and put long scissors to my throat. They took my camera but I could trade. I gave them all the cash I had and got back the camera. Luckily we didn’t get hurt and it’s just money but we are quite shocked. All that happened today, on a Saturday at 3:15pm! At that moment we were the only tourists up there.

After the incident we went to the police to report. It was a lucky coincidence that a translator was at the Gendarmerie when we got there because they do NOT speak English.

Very important, if you call the police on the distress call they only speak french.

CSSN NOTE: while not always easy or convenient, making a formal police report as these victims did is important, crimes not reported in this way for all intents and purposes , never occurred.
