DETAILS: Owners tied the dinghy to the dock between Buccaneers and Simpson Bay Marina when they went for dinner at 1830HRs. When they returned at 2130HRS, only a portion of the cut painter remained. A report was made to the Coast Guard.

UPDATE 30 April 2022 : A police report was made and a charter company recovered the “left behind” dinghy in Simpson Bay, it was complete and undamaged when it was returned to the owners

STOLEN ITEMS: Not succcessful – attempted dinghy theft.

DETAILS: Owners were asleep onboard and awoke to voices at 0400HRs and overheard 2 men, one exclaimed in clear English “Oh f***, there is a chain and a lock”, and then some splashing was heard. Upon investigation the in-the-water dinghy was still chained to the yacht and no one was visible. Nothing was taken from the the dinghy.

STOLEN ITEMS: Carib dinghy with Tohatsu 19.8 HP outboard (grey) and AB dinghy with Tohatsu 9.8 HP outboard(black)
SECURED: Locked
DETAILS: At approximately 0200HRS a lone male approached the Sint Maarten Yacht Club by kayak or paddleboard. He spent 7 minutes using bolt cutters to cut the cable that locked the 2 dinghies to the floating EZ dock tied to the main Yacht Club dock. He tied the dinghies together and departed under power. A report was made to the police and coast guard, and all video surveillance was shared with the authorities.

UPDATE: About 2 weeks after the theft, the SMYC has recovered one of the 2 stolen dinghies, it had been abandoned on the beach of Royal Palm resort. Unfortunately the 19.8HP 4 stroke engine was nonfunctional, badly damaged and required extensive repairs.

STOLEN ITEMS: Orange colored RIB dinghy / 6HP-4S Suzuki outboard
SECURED: Locked
DETAILS: Owners were asleep onboard in Simpson Bay while their in-the-water cable locked dinghy was stolen overnight. The thieves cut the lock. A police report to Dutch authorities is planned.

UPDATE 2/2/2021 Dinghy was found intact with engine in location where it could not have gone by itself, possibly taken for a joyride or abandoned after being used for some other purpose.
